Photochromic lenses are eyeglass lenses that are clear indoors and darken automatically when on exposure to light of sufficiently high frequency, most commonly ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In the absence of sunlight or low ambient light conditions, the lenses return to their clear state.
The Photochromic treatment is applied throughout the body of the lens by casting at moderate temperatures. They are made of glass or polycarbonate material. We principally use them in Syght's computer and gaming glasses, which get darks during bright sunlight and clear indoors while gaming or using a computer. When in contact with UV light, the photochromic particles are activated in 30 to 60 seconds and take somewhat longer to clear.
If you're not sure about their working, cover one of the lenses with your hand, put the sunglasses on exposure to sunlight, wait 30 to 50 seconds and check the difference between the activated and non-activated lenses.
Photochromic lenses can be worn all day, every day, just like regular eyeglasses, even while driving, working on a computer, gaming, or watching Netflix. Anybody can benefit from them, but especially those who regularly interchange from indoors to outdoors. Photochromic glasses can be perfect for children wearing prescription glasses and unlikely to juggle two separate pairs of glasses - regular prescription glasses and sunglasses. It also helps their eye health from an early age by protecting them from the sun and UV rays.
Photochromic lenses were originally developed to protect the eyes from bright sunlight, but now Syght offers a new benefit: Protecting the eyes from the harmful blue light of electronic devices. Most people buy photochromic lenses to ease the transition from artificial (indoor) to natural (outdoor) lighting because they eliminate the need for prescription sunglasses.
Please note: Standard photochromic lenses do not work inside a car due to the windscreen blocking out the UV rays which are needed to activate the chemical process, which causes the lens to darken.
